How to choose motor oil for aggressive driving and short-distance driving?

For vehicles that are frequently driven aggressively (frequent rapid acceleration, high RPM, prolonged high loads) or engaged in prolonged short-distance driving (single trips <10 kilometers, frequent starts and stops), engine oil selection should prioritize high-temperature protection, cold start lubrication, oxidation resistance, and cleaning performance. The following are specific considerations:

1. Aggressive driving: Enhanced high-temperature oil film and shear resistance are required

Aggressive driving subjects the engine to high temperatures (above 120°C), high RPM (above 3000 rpm), and high loads, requiring the engine oil to withstand greater mechanical shear forces and oxidative stress. The core requirement is to maintain oil film stability and delay oxidative degradation.

1. Choose high-viscosity fully synthetic engine oil:

Recommended grades include 5W-40, 10W-40 (or higher viscosity grades like 10W-60, provided they meet manufacturer specifications). These oils have stronger high-temperature viscosity (SAE 40), enabling thicker oil films between pistons and cylinder walls, crankshafts and bearings, thereby preventing oil film breakdown at high temperatures.

2. Prioritize fully synthetic base oils:

Fully synthetic motor oils (such as PAO polyalphaolefins or ester-based oils) have significantly higher oxidation stability than mineral oils or semi-synthetic oils, slowing acid value increases and sludge formation at high temperatures, thereby extending oil life.

3. Focus on oxidation resistance and cleaning performance:

Choose motor oil certified to API SP grade or above (or ILSAC GF-6A). This type of motor oil contains more efficient detergents (such as polyether amines) and antioxidants (such as phenolic compounds), which can effectively remove carbon deposits inside the engine and prevent sludge buildup.

2. Long-term short-distance driving: Optimize cold start and low-temperature flow properties

Long-term short-distance driving (such as commuting to and from work in the morning and evening) prevents the engine from fully warming up. At low temperatures (<50°C), engine oil becomes thicker, and water vapor and carbon deposits produced by incomplete combustion accelerate oil degradation. The key requirements are rapid lubrication of cold start components and resistance to low-temperature oxidation:

1. Low-viscosity fully synthetic engine oil:

Recommended grades include 0W-20 and 5W-30 (meeting the manufacturer's manual's low-viscosity requirements). These oils have better low-temperature flow properties (0W indicates flowability at -35°C), enabling them to quickly reach all engine components (such as pistons and camshafts) during cold starts, thereby reducing cold-start wear.

2. Enhanced cleaning and anti-emulsification performance:

Short-distance driving can easily cause free water (from moisture in the crankcase ventilation system) and carbon deposits to mix into the oil. It is necessary to choose oil with strong cleaning and dispersing properties (such as those with detergent formulations) to prevent sludge and emulsions from forming.

3. Shorten the oil change interval:

Long-term short-distance driving accelerates oil oxidation (due to large temperature fluctuations) and contamination (from moisture and carbon deposits). It is recommended to shorten the oil change interval to 5,000–7,000 kilometers (fully synthetic oil can be extended to 8,000–10,000 kilometers, but regular oil condition checks are still required).

In summary, following the manufacturer's manual, shortening the replacement interval, and regularly checking the oil condition can ensure a longer engine lifespan.

Note: If the vehicle exhibits oil consumption (over 0.3L per 1,000 kilometers) or high mileage (over 100,000 kilometers), consult a professional technician to select oil containing molybdenum additives or high-viscosity specialized oil.
